Focal Fossa | Tuning Ubuntu

Two years after my post on the beaver, it has come the time to tune this fine free software to my liking.
It was released with a few significant changes, particularly under the hood. To check whats new, please check these posts by Canonical here and here. Visually its the best Ubuntu yet (at least in my perspective) even better than the long 10.04 (my favorite), a wonderful kernel for future proofing and running things smoothly.

Still, I need to make a few adjustments, hence this new cheat cheat. I’ve made a small script to automate 98% of the commands listed here. It’s available on my GithHub, here.

But for now, let’s get dirty.

Ubuntu 18.04 | Beaver Fever

So, after the LTS post, here’s a new one. Some things have changed since the last LTS releases, like: no more convergence (which is sad, since canonical was the very first company to think on those terms) meaning, no more Ubuntu unity desktop, at least via the official channels.
This means Ubuntu is back to gnome – oh, that sweet smell of nostalgia.

Ubuntu also introduced a minimal install (the version I’ve installed) , that shaves about 400mb, and gives a bit more control to users that want to choose what goes in or out of the system.

Now that you’ve installed or updated your system, let’s make it run a bit better.

I’m on GitHub!

Well, it’s not that big of deal, but decided to post here overall. I really don’t know how will this blog, that essentially is a cheat-cheat for my tech endeavors, that hopefully helps some of you out there, and probably evolves to something more personal and or more eclectic.

Anyways, so far I’ve made a very little script that pretty much installs everything I need to get my Ubuntu machine up and running, after install. I’ll be sure to keep updating it and create some more stuff that (in theory) makes life a bit easier.

It’s all for now. Cheers!

LibreOffice – Custom Installation

So I’ve recently decided to try the new Ubuntu 18.04. I was happily surprised that finally it had a minimal install, giving user a little bit more freedom to choose what to install. It saves roughly 400mb of disc space, also.
So, I found out that in the minimal installation, LibreOffice wasn’t installed by default. An that’s awesome! 🙂

So if we’re likeminded, and you don’t use or you just not interested in the full suite offered by LibreOffice, here’s how you can customize your installation.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus | Post-install guide

Gotta love that LTS experience!

Going back in time and decided to use a stable and solid ubuntu release, until the next LTS release in april 2018.

it’ been running practically without hiccups, so it’s my distro at the moment. Just hope that Ubuntu Gnome stays an independent branch until there. Fingers crossed.

Now let’s head to what matters: Continue reading “Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus | Post-install guide”

Xubuntu 14.04 LTS | Post Install

Updated January 22nd

This is one of my favorite distros.

It’s light on my system, quite simple, user friendly (in a way that my father uses it) quite pretty out of the box, and simply gets things done easily. At first install, I hated it and ran to pure Ubuntu, but it got better and I decided to take for a spin.

Now, let’s begin…

First things first: you’ll need to update your software sources. Feel free to copy mine, for the time being. Don’t forget to update the mirrors as close to your location as you can.
